So today was my last meeting as YASD secretary. Although I still have to type the minutes from today's meeting, I have passed the torch to the 2010 secretary Jan Miller from Longwood. Congratulations Jan!

Grandma and the Microrwave

Now one would think micorwaves are pretty easy to use and they've been around for a while so it's not really "new" technology and yet grandma still manages to not be able to use it correctly. Well, not so much that she can't use it correctly, but she doesn't know what to do with it when she's done cooking, but there's still time left on the clock.

On Monday grandma was cooking vegetables in the microwave and decided they'd been in long enough so she opened the microwave, removed the vegetables then proceeded to start the microwave up again. At first I thought she had put the vegetables back in, but when I looked at her and saw them in her hands I said, "Are you cooking something else in the microwave?" She said, "No, there was just extra time on the clock so I turned it back on." I then hopped up and cancelled it out because I didn't want it to break or explode. I said, "Grandma, um, it's not safe to run the microwave when it's empty. There's a button right next to start that says stop/cancel. Just press that when you're all done and want to clear it out. She told me ok, but now I'm wondering how long she's been running the microwave when it's empty and if that's why the old one broke. Hmmm.....

RSS Feeds Part 2

Thanks to Dennis, I figured out how to get my RSS feeds onto my blog. I had subscribed to bloglines like Thing 8 had told me, but I didn't really like the way I had to view everything through it. I wanted to know how to get the feeds on my blog so everything was in one easy to use place so Dennis showed me how. I had to add an RSS widget to my page then type in the address of the feed I wanted. Since I had the feeds in bloglines, I was able to copy and paste them over into several widgets so everything is on my blog. Thanks again Dennis!

New Moon

Went to see new moon with Tech Girl, BooksandBlogs327 and a friend from another Library. It was definitely oodles better than Twilight so I'm hoping the movies keep getting better. The special effects for the wolf scenes were awesome and I think a good time was had by all.

RSS Feeds

So I'm trying to get the hang of RSS feeds, but I'm not really enjoying it. I really need to take more time to see if I can get my bloglines pages to be more user friendly because I don't like the set up at all. It's definitely going to take some trial and error to get this to be something I use on a regular basis since there's not much I care to read about everyday.

SCLA Dinner

Attended the SCLA dinner on Friday and had a good time. Couldn't find a seat so ended up at the Director's table - that made for one interesting night. I guess it's never too early to suck up. :)

The committee did a great job. Those of you who didn't go missed out on a good time.

Grandmas, cordless phones & total confusion

Aunt A just bought my grandma a new cordless phone because the old one died. Although she barely knew how to use the old one I guess my aunt felt she should replace it with another cordless - maybe for consistency? Actually, my assumption is that my aunt feels it's better for my grandma to have a cordless so she doesn't have to constantly get up to answer the phone since grandma's getting up there in years. First of all, the only reason my grandma has to get up to answer the phone is because my aunt calls like 10 times a day to make sure everything is ok. Maybe if she didn't call so much grandma wouldn't feel like she has to run for the phone. Damn this logic.

Next, for some reason my grandma likes to leave the phone with Aunt B who lives with us while she's in the kitchen watching reruns of ABC soaps on Soapnet. Why, I'm not quite sure because what happens is the phone rings & Aunt B says, "Ma, phone" and grandma says, "I'll get it" and goes running into the kitchen to get the phone call (which of course is Aunt A asking what she's doing - it's 9 pm at night & grandma is 85; what do you think she's doing - usually sleeping on the couch.) Now don't forget this is a cordless phone the whole purpose of which is not to have to get up to answer - are you shaking your head in disbelief yet?

So, back to the new phone, Aunt A decided to get one of those dual phones that has two handsets so one base can be plugged into the phone line but the other only needs a regular plug. The jack downstairs is by the kitchen so the main phone went there. The second one was put in the living room only instead of putting it on the end table right where the plug is, Grandma pulls out an ugly TV tray (fake, brown wood laminate with gold trim and legs) & sets it next to the couch as if it's a piece of furniture then she sets the 2nd base on it. Tonight I asked her why she decided to do that and not just put it on the pretty end table the purpose of which is holding lamps and phones and she says, "I didn't want to move everything to make room." I look at the end table which has a huge space on it where the tiny base can fit comfortably and see the outlet under it has an open socket and proceed to scratch my head. What the hell is she talking about? Are we looking at the same end table? P.S. It's the only end table in the living room so that was a rhetorical question.

Just when I thought things couldn't get weirder... So, like I said, one would think that this dual handset thing would be a good solution to the running for the phone thing. Grandma can leave one handset in the kitchen with Aunt B while she has the other by her in the living room - no running for the phone. Oh contraire mon frere. Tonight the phone rings and rings and rings. I hear grandma say she'll get it so I get up to investigate. Again grandma is getting up from the living room to get the phone in the kitchen. When she finally gets off the phone with, oh you know, wait for it, Aunt A, I ask, "Why did you get up to answer the phone?" At first she tells me it was because she couldn't see the buttons (the lights were off in the living room) so she went into the kitchen where the light was. Then she says she had to go get the phone because it was in the kitchen. So I said, "You have 2 handsets now, you can keep the living room phone by you..."

I just don't understand grandmas....

Librarian II Test

Took the Librarian II test on Saturday and ended up being 30 minutes late due to a dead body on Sunrise Highway. Lucky me! They let me in to take the test so all was good. There were definitely a lot of math questions on the test and a few charts thrown in for fun. I especially enjoyed the page scheduling chart which was right up my alley. Of course it'll be 6 months before the results are out so I guess I'll be waiting until then for my score. Too bad they don't grade in alphabetical order. :)

Been using Photobucket for a while now to add stuff to the Library's Myspace account. I find images of book jackets, music CDs, tv shows, etc. add them in photobucket then use the HTML code to post on the Myspace page. If you haven't checked it out, here's the link or you can find it on the YA Services pages of our website.
Pages are dropping like flies between sickness and injury and yet most of the books are getting put away. Big thanks to the pages who are making it in and kicking butt!

Started using flickr today. It freaks me out a little to have all of my pictures out there for everyone to see. I did set it as personal so only friends and family can see but still. Tagging is also a pain in the butt when you're just loading up photos. Ugh!

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

Went to see the movie version of Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't pay full price. Although the premise was ok, the dialogue was completely cheesy. I laughed through the entire thing. It was quite goofy. I'm not sure if they'll make any others since the series is something like 11 volumes long, but if they do, I hope they get better.

Fire by Kristin Cashore

I'm listening to this really great book called Fire by Kristin Cashore and am totally in love with the voice of the woman who's reading it. Sometimes I wish I had a Brisith accent because it just makes everything sound so darn classy! I'm on the last disc and am going to be sad to see it end. I highly recommend it if you like fantasy that's not too fantastical, has a great storyline, a little bit of romance and a bit of action and intrigue.

AED Training

Had a four-hour CPR and AED training class today. I can now save my fellow employees and maybe some of the nicer patrons if the need arises. Go me!

I'm a follower...

Ok, so I'm now following all of the people at work who created blogs for the Library 2.0 training as well as two friends from high school. Let's see if I can keep this up or if I get bored with it as I usually do with all "new toys."

Library 2.0

I had always thought about setting up a blog but wasn't sure if anyone would actually read it and what I should say. I guess this is a good opportunity to try it out to see what I think.
